Scully Set To Quit

X-FILES STAR GILLIAN ANDERSON HAS PUBLICLY CALLED FOR AN END TO THE LONG-RUNNING SERIES.

Currently filming the show's seventh season, Anderson is contracted for a further year as FBI agent Dana Scully. However, the acclaimed Emmy-award winning actress reveals that, 'Physically, psychologically, I don't think I could do another season. I'm just spent'.

Anderson's co-star, David Duchovny, will have fulfilled his contract at the end of the seventh season, and has already expressed his intent to leave the show, as has its creator, Chris Carter. Addressing suggestions that The X-Files could continue on without Duchovny and Carter, Anderson states, 'I think it would be a big mistake to draw it out. You want to go out with a modicum of respect."

Nevertheless, Fox is understood to be exploring ways to continue the series. Recent rumours have suggested that Duchovny may be absent from the final four episodes of Season 7, with The Crying Game's Stephen Rea tipped as the show's new leading man.

William B Davis, the series' Cigarette Smoking Man, Says, "I don't think that David will sign on for an eighth season, but that doesn't mean that Fox won't say, 'Well, what can we do with him?' That's what I'm hearing. Fox has a successful thing here, and it may not totally depend on David'.

However, Carter cautions, 'I wouldn't make any assumptions about who is going to be with the show or not, or even if the show is going to be around next year. I think there are way too many things that need to be worked out, decided and cleared up before anyone can say clearly what is going to happen'.

Carter has not discounted the possibility of an eight season but admits that he is developing Season 7 by 'crafting episodes as if it's a sprint to the finish line'. Carter has also promised that this season will be darker than the last, will tie up several story threads such as the fate of Mulder's sister, and feature an episode which will significantly affect Mulder and Scully's relationship. Asked if the pair will go out with a bang, Carter says, 'Depending on your definition of that phrase, yes, definitely," adding that, 'Mulder and Scully will do something they've never done before'.
