Legends Memorabilia Charity Sci Fi Auction
Posted at 11:03 AM (PST) on Thursday, February 24, 2005

Legends Memorabilia is once again supporting an important cause: the local food banks in the Greater Vancouver area. They have decided to use this special Sci-Fi auction to help fund the purchase of several thousand cans of food to be used in a major charitable event called CANstruction?.

Drawing on the ingenuity and compassion of Vancouver's business community, CANstruction? brings together teams to design and build extraordinary structures that are made entirely of canned food. Following a public display, the structures are disassembled and the cans donated to local food banks. In 2004 this event raised more than 125,000 cans of food!

One of the items they are auctioning is Gillian's Robe: "This navy blue house coat was a crew gift from Gillian Anderson. The robe has been designed by 'Boardroom Custom Clothing' in a soft fleece fabric and on the left upper side, embroidered in gold, are the words '19983-1998 Goodnight Everybody - I Love You - Forever - G.A.'."

NEW! They've added a David Duchovny Life Mask: "This fabulous Limited Edition life mask of David Duchovny (Agent Mulder), is an original casting that was taken for his role in the television series ?The X-Files?. One hundred were produced and the mould was then destroyed. No two are exactly alike due to variations in painting and casting techniques."

Wankie the elephant
Posted at 7:13 AM (PST) on Wednesday, February 2, 2005

Chicago Sun-Times

In the wake of the recent death of the elephant Peaches at Lincoln Park Zoo, actress and animal rights activist Gillian Anderson has written state Sen. John Cullerton and state Rep. Sara Feigenholtz urging them to encourage zoo officials to ship Wankie -- the zoo's sole surviving African elephant -- to a warm-weather sanctuary.

Anderson is contacting Cullerton and Feigenholtz since their districts include the zoo.

As first reported here last fall, she wrote to zoo director Kevin Bell on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals after the elephant Tatima died in October. At that time, Anderson asked that both Wankie and Peaches be shipped to warmer climes. PETA has offered to subsidize Wankie's transportation to one of two warm-weather sanctuaries where the 35-year-old pachyderm can "roam freely on hundreds of acres in the company of other African elephants."

In her letter to lawmakers, Anderson stresses a sanctuary is preferable, "rather than shuffle her off to more problems at another zoo."

At this point, a zoo committee is considering where to send Wankie, but no decision has yet been reached.
