Encore, Starz's sister channel, has officially thrown its hat into the original programming ring.

It will be launching its Encore Originals slate with three projects including an adaptation of the Herman Melville classic Moby Dick.

This three-hour miniseries, which stars William Hurt, Ethan Hawke and former "X-Files" star Gillian Anderson, will premiere on Aug. 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT and conclude the following evening.

Hurt will play the whale-plagued Captain Ahab, while Hawke will portray Ahab's first mate Starbuck, and Anderson will play Ahab's wife, Elizabeth. Donald Sutherland also stars in the RHI production.

"Like the music of Mozart, "Moby Dick" connects us to our ancestors, reaching across the generations as few things can anymore. Watching this production with the same thoughts and emotions as they did: Who could ask for more?" - Full Review (Wall Street Journal)

Gillian, about her character (Ahab's wife) - ""He carries a painting of her; he places it in a drawer. I think that's a profound decision, and there's a lot of emotion that we see Ahab make the decision to put it in the drawer and then pursue his passion, which is the big white whale." - Full article (Los Angeles TV Insider,

PBS Explores the Roots of Todays Biggest Television Hits
Business Wire

Since its inception, television has served as a lens on American society, and in the expansive world of modern TV, todays heroes and villains have come a long way from their predecessors. AMERICA IN PRIMETIME showcases this iconic American art form, which has both reflected and shaped our national character. The four-part series premieres Sundays, October 30-November 20, 2011, 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET on PBS. Each episode of the series focuses on one of the key archetypes:

The Crusader delves into the increasingly grey area between right and wrong as television heroes confront internal demons while seeking their own forms of justice. Interviews include Alan Alda (M*A*S*H); Steven Bochco and David Milch (NYPD Blue); Chris Carter and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files); Bob Cochran and Joel Surnow (24); Michael C. Hall (Dexter); Shawn Ryan and Michael Chiklis (The Shield); and David Shore and Hugh Laurie (House), among others.

Gillian Anderson to star in project airing on PBS in April
By Jon Weisman
July 7, 2011

PBS' "Masterpiece" will air a revival of "Great Expectations" starring Gillian Anderson, David Suchet and Ray Winstone next year.

Anderson will play Miss Havisham in "Expectations," slated as a three-episode miniseries, co-produced by BBC Drama Production.

"Expectations" is scheduled to air in April, two months after the 200th anniversary of author Charles Dickens' birth. (BBC1 is scheduled to premiere "Expectations" in the U.K. this year at Christmastime.)

"Masterpiece" exec producer Rebecca Eaton said she is eager to see Anderson in the role of "the beautiful, mysterious and manipulative Miss Havisham," adding that the thesp's "hypnotic portrayal of Lady Dedlock in 'Bleak House' showed that she and Dickens are a perfect match."
